The Jubilee Pennants
If you have not yet had the chance to see the Jubilee Pennants at Cresswell House here are some pictures for you to see.
ACWW – Marj Read
Hello ladies. For those of you who remember my talks over the years you will know that ACWW was started by Madge Watt and that it actually came into being, following a long campaign by her, in Stockholm in 1933. This obviously means that next year the movement will be 90 years old so watch this space for information for a fundraising event to support their incredible work around the world.
You will also be happy to know that Marj has been out and about tirelessly recruiting new members!
Centenarian Celebrations at Bamburgh
Bamburgh WI celebrated a member Mim Woodeson’s 100th birthday with a party for her fellow members, friends and neighbours at their September meeting. Best wishes and congratulations from everyone in the Federation. We all hope you enjoyed your special day.
In Memory of Her Majesty – Alison Kingston
As part of the North Sunderland and Seahouses WI celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee trees were planted, and a flower bed created in the centre of Seahouses. Each Monday several members not only have a walk and a
Coffee, but also maintain the flower bed to ensure that it is colourful and tidy for all to enjoy in memory of Her Majesty.
Wandering Winnie – Tracey Mitchell
When members of Cramlington WI took Winnie on a recent Med cruise they never guessed she would meet TV personality Susan Calman, who was there recording a travel show. So, watch out for Winnie and some of the WI’s Committee when it airs on TV at the end of the month! Since then, Winnie has also been to Greece, Canada, and Alaska.
Norham WI Planting a Tree of Friendship – Susan Thorburn
Sometimes social media can be a real force for good in that it allows us to plant and nurture seeds of friendship with people we wouldn’t normally meet in our daily life.
This is exactly what happened when Margaret Charlton, Marjorie Grahamslaw and Margaret Jeffrey of Norham WI
joined the WI Wanderers Facebook group during the pandemic. A friendship began with the Vice President and Secretary of Cromford WI in Derbyshire, Judy Noble and it was suggested that the two WIs should twin.
To commemorate the twinning, Cromford WI gifted a Crab Apple tree to Norham WI which was planted early in October. Present were members of Norham WI, Christine Levasseur, President of Cromford WI and Judy Noble (see picture). Thanks go to Bob Nevins, Manager of the Ford and Etal Estates, for his advice and kindly donating the tree. This enabled Cromford WI to donate the money they would have spent on the tree to Charis House a Women’s Refuge in Buxton, Derbyshire. Also, representatives of the Jubilee Field Trustees and Orchard Group of Norham Development Trust attended with 2 local tree experts who assisted and gave advice – backbreaking work but they did an excellent job! Following the tree planting ceremony, Norham WI hosted afternoon tea at the Mason’s Arms in Norham for our guests. We all look forward to continuing to strengthen our friendship and to having lots of fun along the way.
Poppy Cascade in Morpeth – Judith Reynolds
This was made by members and friends of Morpeth Town WI, with donations of yarn and poppies from:
St Mary’s Belles WI, Pegswood and Bothal WI, St George’s Knit and Natter and Stannington Sewing Group.
The netting which holds the poppies was donated by Dobbies Garden centre.
There are about 2500 poppies which took 8 months to create and attaching them to the netting took a further 300 hours.
Maeve Thurley – Jennifer Graham
It is with great sadness that our dear member Maeve Thurley of Widdy Woods WI (renamed Widdrington Stn & Stobswood), died on 7 October. She was a member since the start of our WI in October 2008 and was Treasurer from July 2010 to September 2022. Maeve was a well-loved member of community as well as
our WI. She was the wise owl that all turned to for advice and sympathy and she also had a great sense of humour. Maeve will be very sorely missed by us all.
Speakers Corner – Mike Charlton: He talks are about writing a book, not only the writing, which is the easy part it’s the next bit which is difficult. What’s next? Publishing? Who and how easy? Alternatives? Costing? Distribution, and so forth. He doesn’t charge a fee, but if travelling more than 12 miles from Warkworth, would charge travelling expenses. Contact: T: 07375 957 902 and
