CPR = CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION
THROPTON W.I. committee arranged an interesting demonstration of CPR which was given by a local person, highly trained in CPR technique. Twelve of us assembled in Thropton Memorial Hall one June afternoon and watched Paul bring out of his van a variety of plastic torsos, masks, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) and other paraphernalia.
In an easy and friendly manner Paul talked about the different situations when an emergency might arise, encouraging us to ask questions. He then paired us off to share a “body” and took us through the nine or ten important points that needed to be followed. Those of us who felt they could not get down onto the ground by the casualty took part in the procedure with the torso balanced on a chair. The most difficult part was breathing air into the dummies, but before long we could see the chest rise as we perfected our technique. We were shown how to use the contents of a defibrillator pack which included, much to our surprise, a shaver to remove any chest hairs – these hairs would have reduced the effectiveness of the defibrillator.
It was a most enlightening experience, and all participants felt they had learnt a great deal and hopefully would now have some of the basic life support skills to cope with an emergency. We recommend it.
