Happy 100th Birthday – NorthSunderland & Seahouses WI had a lovely afternoon tea to celebrate their centenary Birthday in February which also included reading the Northumbrian News!

Denton Dollies get creative – Linda Ames
Following a talk from Carly Searle from the Marie Curie Hospice in west Newcastle, members set to with their crochet hooks and knitting needles to produce a range of yellow items and cream egg covers, some of which are shown here. 90 items were donated, and then used within the Hospice for their Go Yellow Fundraising Day in March. They went down so well that by the time some of our members arrived at the event only an hour after it’s start, they had almost sold out! This was on top of the £76.22 raised at the meeting, £30 raised from a Name the Bunny competition and 45 Easter Eggs/Packs of Chocolate collected for the local Foodbank. All in all, an impressive achievement for a small group of just 26 members.

Thank you Blyth West – Marj attended Blyth West WI Annual Meeting as an Adviser and was delighted to receive a gift as many WIs do to their Adviser. They decided that she may prefer random to a plant and as you can see it was a surprise but fabulous x

Gratulerer med dagen Florence! 100 Years Young – Marian Lampert
Four our April meeting, Thropton WI helped their member Florence Baker celebrate her 100th birthday.  Florence has been in our WI for very many years and still attends regularly and takes part in all our activities. She was originally Norwegian – a teenager during the Nazi occupation – and she received 100th birthday congratulations from both the Norwegian king and, of course, from King Charles III.

Standing with Giants! Newcastle East WI, a small but determined group meeting in Ouseburn, was proud to send off 135 poppies to the Standing with Giants team.

Federation Event – Food Safety Course
It is STRONGLY suggested that any WI who provides food to their members and/or members of the public, has at least 1 if not more members educated with a certificate in food safety.
The Federation will be running a food safety course to fulfil this recommendation, on 28 September 2024. It will run 9:30-3:30 ish – hot drinks will be provided on arrival and at lunch, you will need a packed lunch. There will be a small multi choice question paper at the end of the day. Certificates will be issued.
Priced at £30 per person attending it can and should come out of WI funds as it is of benefit for the whole WI. Please apply via the application form which is included in this month’s mailing.

She charges £25 pp for two hours, doing a range of different activities, starting with acrylic painting events but if the Women’s Institute were interested in regular monthly/weekly events she could provide a new activity each week. From around the Federation
Longhorsley WI had Sophie Kirkup to speak about setting up her business; Todburn Soaps. She painted a light- hearted and very entertaining story about procuring a few goats then delving into the chemistry of soap making. Sophie brought samples for us to test and buy, which was very convenient for Mother’s day. They would recommend her and really enjoyed the presentation.
