Me, Myself and WI
Monday 9 – Sunday 15 May 2022
The objective of Me, Myself and WI is to encourage members to take time to look at their own mental health and physical wellbeing; making time to put
themselves first and recognise ways in which they can make small adjustments to their daily life and to help improve their understanding of the importance of taking care of their mind and body.
Show the Love
Hedgeley WI Members made cards to celebrate “Show the Love” month at the February meeting using die cut elements of nature. Newbiggin by the Sea WI members made green hearts to ‘Show the Love‘ for climate change. They were hung near Newbiggin promenade with an invitation for people to take one and use it to remind them to take care of our beautiful world.
International Women’s Day – Rachel Dowdeswell
This coincidentally was the day of our meeting for Newbiggin by the Sea we spoke about the inequalities that still exist in many areas between men and
women. We highlighted the gender pay gap but also the fact that many everyday items are designed for men rather than women to use, for example seatbelts that are usually fitted too high for most women to comfortably use. In the enclosed photo we are committing ourselves to do all we can to continue to Break the Bias!
A digging we will go – Planting trees around the Federation
Some Cramlington WI members were planting trees at Northumberlandia with Cramlington Town Council and the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. The tree planting was part of an effort to make Cramlington greener. Every tree planted is better for our environment and it was great fun too. Janine Heslop
Warkworth WI commemorated the Centenary of their formation in November 1922 by planting a tree on The Stanners. Long serving member, Maisie Luke, completed the planting, ably assisted by her great grandson, while members looked on. Whips have also been planted elsewhere in the village, including a rowan tree donated by Northumberland Federation of WIs, as part of the Queen’s Canopy.

Speaker Recommendations:
North Gosforth WI was lucky again to have an excellent speaker. He gave a very informative talk about his background and his many years of volunteering with the RNLI at Tynemouth. If you are interested in booking please contact the RNLI at Tynemouth.
Barry Mead – Newbiggin by the Sea WI enjoyed a talk and visual presentation from Barry, who is an Archaeologist and Historian, on the restoration of the Cresswell Pele Tower. The tower is now open to visitors free of charge. He has also written a small book called “Cresswell Curiosities”. A very informative and interesting evening. Contact him on 01670 856 557 E: brnawgrundy@gmail.com
Abbi Groocock – Royal Northern Sinfonia. Although it was her first stab at giving a talk, you wouldn’t think so, she was a very confident speaker, knew her stuff, and was very informative about the Northern Sinfonia. The ladies of North Gosforth WI really enjoyed her talk which came with a slide show. No fee, but a donation for the orchestra would be appreciated. Email: abbi.groocock@sagegateshead.com
Victoria Molnar – Clousden Hill WI had a wonderful evening with Victoria who took us on her “Accordion Adventure”. A fascinating journey! Along the way we learnt about the instrument and her passion for it. The accompanying music took us all over the world and was beautifully played. She would love to visit other WIs.
