September, are you sure? Well hasn’t the summer sped by quickly, especially as it only caught up with us at the end of August and by October we will be changing the clocks. I think I need to change mine for something that gives me a few more hours to get everything done!
As you may now know we have selected our next recipient of the Centenary Bursary and by the time you read this Newsletter she will hopefully have attained her grades to send her to the University of Leeds where she will study medicine. You have previously received notification of a resolution on the continuing of this bursary which was the brainchild of Sue Malloy and has been in operation since 2015. Please make sure that this is discussed at your September meeting so that your delegate to the Council Meeting knows how you want her to vote. If you do NOT have a delegate attending but wish to register a vote can you please send it in to the office in writing, signed by your Chairman or secretary.
On the subject of the Council Meeting I can now reveal that our morning speaker will be Ian Humphries who will give us a lighthearted talk and inside information on the regalia that belongs to the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne. He will be bringing along some of the items to show us and this will, I believe, include the Mace itself.
We have also now got a new item on our up to the minute website and it is called “Around the Federation” so this is the place to send photographs and items of interest from your neck of the woods. In the last couple of months I have been to Thropton to the unveiling and sitting on of a new bench donated by the WI to mark their 100th. I was cutting the ribbon along with their oldest member Florence. It was a lovely day followed by a fantastic lunch. Move on a few weeks and I was celebrating the Paris Olympics, very ooh la la up in Alnmouth. There was a lot of french pastries and fancies for tea and a lot of very chic looking ladies at the event. There was even an Olympic quiz which thankfully did not involve any physical activity, just a lot of brain power. Thanks to both WIs and you may be able to see the fun on the aforementioned website.
Talking of quizzes I hope you have all sent in your applications for the Federation Quiz Heats (23 Sept) and have now started swotting up on all the stuff that won’t be asked and forgetting all the stuff that will, ah well c’est la vie!
I must finally mention my trip as a WI Adviser to Eglingham WI’s Annual Meeting, no I didn’t get lost as I have been before. It was a lovely evening and they had decided to have some entertainment, a magician. Now I am well known in the family for not being the greatest fan of this form of entertainment but I was blown away. He managed to pinch my watch and use one of my £10 notes which re-emerged later in an envelope on another table, but being from Yorkshire he couldn’t persuade me to part with a £20 just in case it did a runner!! Thank you Brenda and all the members for a wonderful night and a different perspective on magic, so Sooty and his pals had better brush up their act and ditch the water pistol if they are going on the road with me again.
See you all soon
