It is an absolute joy to be able to fill a message with so many congratulations and pats on the back for our members and I can start off by saying that we made it into WI Life once again. If you look at page 11 you will see Kirsty Spreadbury from Whey Aye WI with Betty and also see Katherine Hardy Western WI with Red. I know I am biased but aren’t Betty and Red
gorgeous?

Next it’s a huge thank you to all who entered the Food and Flowers Competition Day on 5 October and many, many congratulations to all those who won one of the coveted certificates. As always the standard was excellent making judging a difficult task – so well done and thanks to the judges too. I have seen a preview of next year’s Federation Day schedule and it is fabulous so another well done to Karen and her Craft Committee who worked so hard this year on all the events they put on for members.

I am now delighted to tell you the name of this year’s Centenary Bursary winner. She is Claudia Milne and was a pupil at Whitley Bay High School. Claudia has now started on her BSc degree in Geographic Information Science at Newcastle University. Although I personally was not involved in the interviewing process I can tell you that once again it was difficult for the interviewers to make their final choice.

I feel like I am doing the Oscar’s or Bafta’s here with “and the award goes to——-“ … because I can now tell you that following seven applications for the Ella Pattinson bursary for a course at Denman College, and great deliberation by every member of the Board of Trustees, the winner is Diane Hiller-Hall of Hartford Bridge WI. I am sure that she will enjoy her visit to Denman.

Well done to all those teams that are now through to the Federation Quiz Final on Thursday 21 November at Stannington Village Hall where I personally cannot wait for a word better than “tittynope” to find its way into the questions. If you weren’t at one of the heats just ask someone who was!

I can only end by thanking everyone who has invited me to their own special WI events in the last month and they are Whitley Lodge’s 40th; North Gosforth’s 40th; Rothbury’s Fizz and Fashion event; Chester’s Group event and Craster’s October Meeting.

If I have missed anyone out it wasn’t deliberate and my thanks go to you all for your continuing support.
