Here am I planting the whips outside Cresswell House as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy.
The last two months have shown Her Majesty the Queen featuring in our Newsletter and this month you will find a delightful image of her on the card we received thanking the Federation and all the members for our message of congratulations on her Platinum Jubilee. What a wonderful document for our archives.
Also I hope you noticed that members from the Federation are in two photographs in the latest WI Life. One of the photographs is of Liz Kirkbride and Jill Walker receiving the Huxley Cup from National Chairman Anne Jones on page 10, and on page 16 a lovely photograph and comments from first time delegate to an Annual Meeting, Helen Pye of Newcastle East WI.
As most of you know my WI, Southridge, was part of Tyneside Federation and, when Tyneside merged with
Northumberland, we answered a request in the Newsletter to “twin” with Thropton WI which we did and enjoyed
some memorable days and lunches both at Thropton and down at the Coast. So it was a special treat to attend
their 100th birthday lunch recently and see so many friends once again. Thank you ladies for inviting me and also
thank you to Warden in Hexham for their 100th lunch at Catton and Cullercoats WI for a lovely meeting. It really is
so nice to get out and see you all enjoying what WIs do best, friendship, fun and excellent “crack”. I would also
like to thank those of you who attended the Roadshow in Bamburgh Pavilion in July and to the ladies of Bamburgh
WI for the catering and Sue Malloy for the Jubilee biscuits. You are all amazing in your support of the Federation.
Now it’s the advertising paragraph so read on and sign up which is most appropriate for our literary lunch with
renowned local crime writer Mari Hannah on Wednesday 5th October. We are holding this great event in the
Banqueting Suite at Hexham Mart which is very easy to get to and has excellent car parking facilities. There will
be a three course lunch followed by Mari’s talk. The bar will be open and there will be a bottle in a bag raffle.

look forward to a fabulous afternoon.
Details are also with your WI regarding the Annual Council Meeting on Saturday 24 September at The Royal
Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne where we will hear The Whistletesters perform their song “From
Twinsets and Pearls to Calendar Girls” in the morning session and in the afternoon we will be entertained by
Adam Scott who has performed from The West End to Broadway in some wonderful productions.
All that remains is for me to say that I hope to see many of you at one of the final two Roadshows at either Heddon
on the Wall or Cresswell House which, by the way, has had the leak in the roof in the main room upstairs fixed so
you won’t get your hair wet even if it rains and we can put the bucket away!
