As winter approaches and displacement continues to rise across Ukraine, the Whitfield Women’s Institute (WI) in Northumberland has spearheaded a humanitarian appeal to support both people and animals affected by the ongoing conflict.
Responding to growing local concern, members of the Whitfield WI collected a wide range of essential supplies, including bedding, warm clothing, children’s toys for Christmas, and pet food. They also gathered cotton materials for making frontline bandages and clothing suitable for adaptation for amputees.
The appeal received an overwhelming response, with donations coming in from across the area. Thanks to this generosity, the WI has assembled a significant shipment of aid that will be sent to Ukraine in time for Christmas.
The initiative was inspired by an event hosted by ‘Sunderland for Ukraine’ for the Mooreland Group of WIs in Northumberland. During the visit, representatives shared stories of Ukrainian culture, personal experiences of the conflict, and traditional food. Their testimonies left a deep impression on local members, motivating them to take action.
A spokesperson for the Whitfield WI said the group remains committed to supporting Ukraine:
“We were truly moved by what we learned, and we will continue to help for as long as we are needed.”
The Whitfield WI hopes their efforts will bring warmth, comfort, and solidarity to those facing another harsh winter far from home.
