So many of you wonderful WIs held special events celebrating the 80 years of VE Day – here are a few …

Newbrough WI: hosted and catered for a village celebration of the 80th anniversary of VE day. W we asked for donations to SSAFA [Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association]

North Gosforth WI:  The Post Box topper was outside the post office in Brunton Park and some of the ladies from WI came to the Film Club in St. Aidan’s Community room for the film ‘A Great Day out’ about Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret going out of the palace to enjoy VE Day celebrations. We then had afternoon tea with scones, jam and cream.

Cullercoats WI:  Cullercoats WI display in Whitley Bay.   On 8th May a party was held with music and a buffet from the 40s.

Warkworth WI: made a poppy banner, dressed the Millenium garden in the village and had a gathering on the morning of VE day with a minutes silence and the reading of the poem ‘Victory in Europe’ by John Carter Brown. We’re going to alter the banner for VJ day.

Craster WI: Erected their poppy display in the harbour and laid 5 wreaths one for each of the servicemen from our small village who gave their lives in WW2.   The second photo is of our oldest member Doris Clarke with her daughter Pauline.  The third photo was taken when we served cream teas to the village to celebrate VE Day 80.

Alnmouth WI:  Were proud to host ladies from seven other WI’s along with 20 of our members to a wonderful celebration of the great day when our freedom was declared.

As ladies arrived we played a number of war time songs including Keep the Home Fires burning and we started with an exert from Winston Churchill’s famous speech declaring ‘the war is over’.  Our catering corps provided an amazing assortment of wartime inspired sandwich’s, sausage rolls, cakes, tray bakes, biscuits and scones (with the help of Quartermaster Janis Crook who managed to secure certain ingredients which were on shaker rations).

In between the savoury treats and the sweets we had a quiz and a funny games of building a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows before  rendition of the famous Dad’s army sketch ‘Don’t tell them your name Pike’.   After an excellent attempt to eat the vast array of cakes and sweet treats we finished with a good old singalong with dozens of union jacks.  Our fizz bar provided ‘hooch’ and was a roaring success.

Helpers and servers looked the part as land girls, nurses and even Rosie The Rivetter turned up.  All in all a great day for over 100 women including Federation Chair  Marj Read.

Bardon Mill WI: VE Day Tea at Bardon Mill WI on 4th May. We raised approx £500 for Royal British Legion. Photos are of 2 of our own ‘land girls’ taking a break, and a former member with her husband getting into the VE Day spirit!
