Thropton WI members’ gathered on 17 July to unveil their new centenary bench in the village which had been appropriately bedecked in WI ribbon colours of green and white.

Our own Marj Read, had been invited to “cut the ribbons” on the new seat.  Marj said she knew Thropton W.I. very well and “It is a great honour to be invited back to the official handing over of this wonderful bench to the village of Thropton” and wished the WI well for the next 100 years.  Coincidentally, one of the members present at the unveiling was centenarian, Florence Baker, who had very recently received cards of congratulations from two Kings – H.M. Charles III and the King of Norway, Harald V.

The dedication plaque on the seat reads “Donated to Thropton Village to mark the centenary of the Thropton WI 1922-2022 with help from Spar”.  The seat is situated near to the Spar garage and shop and Spar Manager, Gary Hix said they were very pleased to have paid for its installation.

“Thropton W.I. raised the money to pay for the bench which is made of re-cycled plastic and is therefore maintenance free.   WI secretary, Chris Butterworth, who undertook the work on the project, commented that the bench was there to be used both by residents of the village and visitors passing through.  It was also a way of remembering past WI members and those who had contributed to the life of the village.”
