Hello ladies, here we are with another month having flown by and it’s still raining as I write this message. I can only hope that when you receive your copy it might be a little brighter.

I am saddened to let you know that after over 50 years, Bygate WI has now been suspended due to being unable to provide Officers to fulfil the requirements of the WI Constitution. I am mentioning this to remind everyone that it is not just small WIs that find themselves in this predicament. Bygate essentially had a good number of members, many of whom were original members and had already done most of the ‘jobs’ that go with being on committees but if the 3 main Officer places cannot be filled then the WI Adviser (in this case, me!) had no choice but to suspend. Being on your committee is an opporunity to learn more about the workings of the WI and if everyone on the committee pulls together then it is such a rewarding experience. So, this is my plea for more of you to consider giving a little bit more for the benefit of your own WI and its future.

Can I also remind members that the WI has a Code of Conduct which applies to all members when at an event or indeed when representing their WI or Federation. Anything posted on Facebook etc. is in the public domain. Any photos published should have the permission of those in them, but more importantly any adverse comments about an event should be addressed with the organisers rather than on social media.

Don’t forget to get your name down for the Lunch with the Chairman at Derwent Manor hotel on Wednesday 20th May.The applications are out along with the menu, so don’t miss this new venue in our Lunch events.

The Federation Quiz is returning this year and I can now tell you that the heats will be held on Thus 17th Sept, venues:Newbrough Town Hall, St. Columba’s Church Wideopen and Ulgham WI hall. The final will be held at Cresswell House on Fri 9th October. Teams must have no more than 4 members but WIs can of course enter more than one team.

We are also going to have a day trip to Newburgh Priory in Coxwold (just south of Thirsk). We shall have a stop for food and retail therapy in Northallerton. Date: Wednesday (market day in Northallerton) 24th June. Newburgh Priory has its origins way back in the 10th century and of course fell foul of Henry V111. Later links with Oliver Cromwell and is now a family home, wedding venue and hosts plant fairs etc. so quite a bit to learn about. I don’t need to tell you about Northallerton with plenty of eating places and some lovely shops for browsing plus a Norman Church at the North end of the High Street. Further details to follow.
