In Autumn 2024 Women of Walton WI became aware of cuts in funding for rehousing the victims of domestic abuse in the several local refuges.
Within weeks I took a car loaded with the WI members gifts, ranging from toiletries, cushions, throws, to 100 sets of cutlery, baking trays and a full delightful tea set! When rehoused, women get the essentials but that might be just two knives forks and spoons.
To continue this generosity following a member’s suggestion, WOW WI decided to fill shoeboxes for Christmas for the ladies. In December another car full of gifts went to one of the refuges whose locations are not disclosed, for the safety of the residents. Members commented that they underwent a reality check of how fortunate they were, and as a result felt inspired to share with others. Compassion and kindness were modelled, in true WI fashion, through practicality with humanity.
The outpouring of generosity from WOW WI members is heartwarming; but that there is still such a need in 2024/25 is chilling
Refuges for those escaping domestic violence started 40 years ago in the UK when the problem was finally acknowledged. Sadly, we have needed a steady increase in the numbers of refuges as the numbers of victims, women and children continues to rise.
It is a shocking indictment of our society, and its inability to instil tolerance, justice and respect for women.
