Bursary Winner Update – Message from Libby Pollard
Hello everyone,
Christmas has come and gone but no rest for me as I have had to complete two very long essays and a podcast as part of my modules!
In February I shall be starting a work placement but as yet I am unsure where, I am looking forward to this very much.
I am still enjoying my course and my grades and feedback have been great!
Happy new year to you and all at the Women’s institute.
Kind regards
Libby

Archery and Axe Flinging Fun! – Janine Heslop
21 Members of Cramlington WI went to an axe throwing and archery session led by 2 experienced instructors who provided all the equipment and arranged a nearby venue. We were split into 2 groups, then each group concentrated on learning the technique of axe throwing or archery, before swapping halfway through the session. We all found archery and axe throwing are not as easy as they look. Some members mastered the techniques whilst others are still a work in progress. Congratulations to Noreen Brent who was the only one to burst a balloon with an arrow, whilst some of us were just grateful to eventually hit the stand that held the target. If WI groups want to arrange a session, contact Luis on 07540 412087.

Remembrance Tribute at Hepscott – Sandra Armstrong
From September members of Hepscott WI began to use the poppy patterns produced earlier in the year to knit lots of poppies. A small group then met in the Village Hall to create a lasting tribute to those who gave their lives in service during the two World Wars and are commemorated by two plaques.
We attached the poppies to a length of green fabric which was then divided to drape around the plaques. There was a slight snag when we realised that none of us could reach high enough to attach our tribute to the supports! A quick trip to the car park ensued and we found two very obliging tall gentlemen who were happy to help us. Appropriately one of them had even been a former member of the armed forces.

Elizabeth Crawford – Garden Village WI
We are sad to tell you that Elizabeth Crawford of Garden Village WI died just before Christmas.
She was a member of Tyneside Federation’s Executive Committee for a number of years and President of Garden Village WI, taking a keen interest in Public Affairs, Science and Books, the latter of which she continued by hosting the regular Book Club of her own WI up until just before her death.
She will be sadly missed by family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

February is the month of Love!
If your WI is doing anything special for Show the Love, please tell us what you did. We’d love to hear from you. To be in time for next months newsletter.
