Federation Donation
Following Moira Bengtson’s appeal at the Annual Council Meeting for WIs to support the Federation, the Board of Trustees would like to thank Cramlington WI for their generous and quick response.
Cramlington Shine Together – Janine Heslop
Members from Cramlington WI braved the cold and wet October weather to complete the Cancer Research UK ‘Shine Walk’, which is a 10k walk around Newcastle and Gateshead. The atmosphere was amazing and ‘the shiners’ decorated themselves in fairy lights, glow sticks, neon face paints – the more lights the better to make the walkers shine bright on the night. Around £1,500 for Cancer Research UK was raised. 1 in 2 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime but cancer survival rates have doubled over the last 40 years thanks to the amazing work by organisations such as Cancer Research UK. It was a great experience for a worthy cause, and we encourage other WIs to get involved next year.
Bardon Mill’s Brush with the Military – Karen
The Bardon Mill WI ladies were invited to a very interesting army engagement event in Hexham recently. Judy Potts, President, Karen Bower, Treasurer, and Anne Brunton, Committee member went along to see what it was all about. It was very interesting, and the Army were certainly engaging. We are in now in talks to see if we can get our Lemon Drizzle Cake dehydrated and into the Army ration pack (ha ha!!)
A Great Send Off – Margaret Jeffrey
As it was our WI Adviser’s last meeting with Norham WI, we made certain that it would be a special one for Prudence Marks. Prudence has been our Adviser for a lot of years and is always made welcome by our group. This special visit was marked by a beautiful handmade card, a delicious cake (card and cake made by Julie Gray) and a rag doll dressed up in 1920’s style (we celebrate our centenary this month) made by Connie Kirby.
Our Exciting Three Months! – Jackie Reeves
Craster WI members have had an action packed and fun three months.
It started in July where Michael Gatherer talked to us all about Scottish Fisherwomen. This was very entertaining, and it brought back many memories for quite a few of the group as their grandmothers had been involved in gutting the herrings.
We also celebrated Sybil Dawson`s 90th birthday which was on the 3 July.
Success at Slaley – Vicky Pepys
Slaley WI hosted a successful Macmillan coffee morning in the village Commemoration Hall on 29 September which raised an astounding £920! The menu of ‘real’ coffee, tea and elderflower cordial with cakes made by members, a ‘cakes to buy’ table, a book stall, a raffle with nearly 25 prizes as well as a fascinating display of memorabilia to further celebrate the groups 100th year anniversary drew a substantial crowd who arrived early and just…stayed! The total monies comprise of sales on the morning and many generous donations.
Well Done, Roddam!
The Roddam Knit and Natter group were runners up in the local award grass roots award, for north Northumberland voluntary awards. What a great achievement for a small group of locally based WI members.
Interest in History – Shelley Lanser
Three of us in Tynemouth WI have received training in how to take an oral history for this project. I’m planning to use that training not just for Northumberland Archives but also to collect histories about our WI.
Northumberland Archives is doing an oral history project and is seeking people to interview who either gave birth or worked at the Castle Hills maternity home near Berwick, the Mona Taylor maternity home near Stannington or were involved with maternity services at Ashington Hospital. For further information, please email archives@northumberland.gov.uk
Betty Nesbit – Ethel Arthur
It is with great sadness that Ponteland WI announces the death of Betty Nesbit at the age of 96. Betty was our oldest and longest serving member, as well as being a past President. She had also been on the Executive Committee at Cresswell House, where she discovered decoupage, and which she successfully taught to many of our members, with excellent results. A well-liked member, Betty will be sadly missed, but remembered with affection by many.
Speaker’s Corner
George Sainthouse. George started looking after bees when he retired and now has 7 colonies kept in woodlands just north of Morpeth. He is a member of Alnwick and District Beekeeping Association. He gives an interesting talk, and he does sell his honey, although he is sold out for this year.
