What a busy month May is going to be with a Coronation, Annual Meetings around the Federation and the Annual Meeting in Cardiff at the very end of the month and, fingers crossed, some lovely warm weather to enjoy. For some of you this will be the first time you have experienced a Coronation event and I am sure you are all getting involved in various events in your own WIs and local communities. I feel that there will be lots of home-made crowns around and a lot of children enjoying dressing up over the Bank Holiday weekend (maybe a lot of adults dressing up too!). I know I will be making a crown at Old Hartley WI’s Coronation WI evening (I might share a pic of it with you later). I hope you attended our tree planting to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles and, on behalf of the Federation a letter of congratulations was sent to King Charles and Queen Camilla inside the winning entry in our competition to create a congratulatory card to mark the occasion. This was won by Louise Stubbs of Corbridge WI. Well done.
I also cannot believe that it is already a full year since Moira and I opened New Hartley Hunnies WI so congratulations to them as I have now conducted their very first Annual Meeting.
We held a very interesting meeting about this year’s resolution on Clean Rivers for People and Wildlife with speakers from the Tyneside Rivers Trust and the Northumberland Rivers Trust. Congratulations to Public Affairs for hosting this event and providing the speakers. It was very well attended by those delegates who will be carrying your votes to Cardiff so please discuss with your members at your May meeting how you want your delegate to vote and if you wish to give her discretion. Discretion is given in case any wording is changed and presented at the Annual Meeting as without discretion a delegate cannot vote on an amended resolution. Finally please make sure that you tell her your decision in good time. We shall be departing for Cardiff early on the morning of Wednesday 24 May and all the delegates should have been notified by each WI that they represent before that date. Resolutions and your right to vote in them are an important integral part of being a WI member. Here in Northumberland we have a proud history of not only supporting campaigns and voting we have also put forward and had passed some excellent resolutions over the years, remember Keep Britain Tidy?
I have been out and about at Castle West and South Tyne Group Meetings and at Tyne and Wear South Federation Annual Council Meeting. I must apologise for missing an event at Shilbottle held in honour of their long serving Treasurer Isabel who has now retired.
Enjoy Coronation Day and three bank holidays and I hope to see you at some event soon.
